Review and recommendations

Ahead of its time, Siolim House is one of the first heritage boutique properties in Goa. Rescued from ruin by Varun Sood in the mid-90’s, the property represents one of Goa’s last manor houses in the sobrado style of architecture. Built in 1675 by a Hindu family that served as administrators for the Portuguese empire in Mozambique and Macau, it is emblematic of houses constructed by Portuguese nobility at home and across their colonies. A sobrado house is essentially a large townhouse with two floors, balconies and in this case, a courtyard. Restoration was a labour of love for Sood and he documents the extensive research he carried out to maintain historical and architectural integrity. The use of traditional materials such as pure lime plaster, 400-year-old tiles and retention of all the original stone mud filled walls maintain the house’s monastic style. Once a 24-room house, today it has 9 spacious suites for its guests and an Ayurvedic spa. The décor is expectedly antique with modern comforts. For those seeking wellness, full panchkarma retreats are on offer as are ala carte treatments from a massage menu. The string of North Goan beaches – Mandrem, Ashwem, Arambol and Morjim are nearby.
