Urban explorers can’t beat Panjim Inn’s location in Fontainhas. An 18th century mansion repurposed as a hotel; it is the first official heritage hotel in Goa. The hotel has 24 heritage rooms across four categories. Described as a museum of sorts, the property is replete with antique furniture and artefacts that tell the story of the Portuguese empire and colonial history. Guests can read in a small library or peruse the art gallery. Objects d’art from Macau, Europe and China dot the place along with four poster beds and old-world armoires. Although the aesthetic is charmingly traditional, modernity is infused gently throughout. The rooms are air-conditioned with modern bathrooms, solar-heated water, mini-fridges, kettles, cable tv and Wi-Fi. The in-house restaurant supplies a big breakfast and does both continental and Indian food well for lunch and dinner. Rooms come with views of the city or of the Rio dé Ourém creek. They also have a 24-hour front desk, free parking on the street and accommodation for drivers. This is a comfortable, no-frills hotel that offers great value considering its location and history.
