This tiny watering hole nestled in the picturesque streets of Fontainhas dates to the 1970’s. On its way to being shut down in 2017, it was rescued from oblivion and relaunched by current owner Atish Antonio Fernandes. Motivated to create a safe, friendly space where people could connect, Fernandes has revived the village tavern at a time when traditional taverns across Goa are dying a slow death. A strictly no-frills interior that cannot seat more than 10 people inside, and maybe 10 more in outdoor seats, Joseph’s is always packed with thirsty locals and travellers. The walls are rustic, the tablecloths reminiscent of Goan auntie’s frocks, and remnants of an old watch shop are seen throughout the space. In the traditional tavern, feni and country liquor were the main stars. At Joseph’s, Fernandes also introduces customers to Goan craft beer and gin. The feni is sourced from a handful of local producers they have a personal relationship with. Tambde rosa – feni with kokum, rose and lime packs a strong punch as does their mango chilli feni cocktail. Joseph’s attracts residents from the community but also draws in those seeking to inhabit a slice of the Goan past. Gundu, the barman, is legendary for his humour, conviviality, and ability to remember regulars’ orders. Goan bar food from another restaurant and homemade dishes by women in the neighbourhood are heated up for food orders. The sounds of Goan fado and jazz combined with the warm, welcoming atmosphere make this a great place to be oneself and make new connections.
