Review and recommendations
One of the oldest bakeries in the Latin Quarter, Confeitaria on Rue de 31 Janeiro has been going strong since 1930. Fresh bread and cakes are still made in wood-fired ovens, and you can find all kinds of Goan sweets and snacks. Celebrities, locals, tourists all flock to the little lane housing this bakery for its legendary reputation. Instagrammers and photographers abound however, and you may have to shoo away the camera-obsessed to get your fill. If you’ve come for the food and not the environs, rejoice because there is much to sample – Swiss rolls, date and walnut cake, prawn rissois, chicken sliders, rum balls and the popular choriz calzone. Confeitaria’s bebinca is especially famous. Other Goan sweets available are different types of doce (fudge), perad, goan biscuits, pinad, dodol, and jujubes. Regulars like to order a vegetable or chicken patty at one of the outdoor tables to people watch. Come early because they run out of stuff fast.
