About the Experience

Catch the ferry across the Mandovi river to the quaint Divar Island, and experience a day in the life of a local Islander. Despite its proximity to Goa’s capital city Panjim, the local community of Divar Island has resisted urbanisation and successfully preserved their rich heritage and unique lifestyle. Enjoy a rare change of pace, as the Island’s blissful tranquility and lush surroundings leave you feeling rejuvenated by the time you head home.
Special Note:
This experience is not a walking trail and requires transportation. Explore the Island using your own vehicle, or we can book one for you (at an additional cost).
about-experience

Highlights

  • A memorable ferry ride across the serene Mandovi river.
  • Get a taste of the minimalist and sustainable island life as we interact with locals and explore indigenous occupations like fishing and Khazan farming (a traditional aqua-agricultural system that ensures an equitable sharing of resources between local farmers and fishermen).
  • Discover the island’s multicultural heritage as we visit landmark monuments – from ancient Hindu temples to Goa’s finest 18th century baroque church with stunning panoramic views.
  • Visit the archeological ruins of a 12th century temple and a mystical holy bathing site called Porne Tirth.
  • Explore the island’s natural hidden caves (subject to weather and accessibility).
  • Enjoy a musical performance by a local musician.
  • End your experience with a sumptuous Goan lunch.

Divar Island is too vast for us to cover on foot, and so we will use vehicles (cars/two-wheelers) to move around the island. The idea is to really take our time exploring each place we visit on the island, and the vehicles will help us reach the far ends of the island easier and quicker.
Yes, we recommend that you bring your own vehicle for the experience. In the event that this is not possible, we can arrange a vehicle for you at an added cost.
The location link will be sent to your mobile along with the details of the experience and the name and contact number of your storyteller.
Yes. There is ample parking space at the meeting point.
Yes, photography is permitted on Divar Island. However, while doing so travellers must take care not to trespass on private property, respect the privacy of local residents and avoid blocking roads/pathways. Photography & videography is strictly prohibited at the Our Lady of Piety (Piedade) Church premises (facade included).
We will take a Government-run commuting ferry boat service which is used by the local island residents and departs every 5 minutes. You will board the ferry with your vehicle (car/two-wheeler).
Absolutely. However, if this is a new experience for you - here are some handy tips: (i) We recommend asking the pillion rider (in case of two-wheelers) / fellow passengers (in case of cars) to walk onto the boat. This will make your vehicle lighter and easier to drive onto the ferry ramp; (ii) For cars, we would advise driving on to the ferry ramp as slowly as possible - using brakes constantly as the wheels touch the ramp surface, and then gently releasing the brakes to ascend into the ferry boat.
No. It is not recommended to consume alcohol during the experience as we will be visiting holy/religious sites. However, as we end our experience with lunch hosted at a local Indo-Portuguese home, on special request we could arrange for some beers or a tasting of the local brew Feni (at an added cost). Alternatively, you can book our Goan Feni & Tapas Experience for a more immersive experience on local Goan cocktails and cuisine.
