Review and recommendations
Renowned Goan artist, Verodina Ferrao De Sousa, works out of an enchanting studio in the backyard of her family-owned building in Karaswada, Mapusa. The old building exudes its own charm, taking visitors back to a bygone era. In it, Verodina’s brother runs an antique shop full of old chandeliers, altars, intricate wooden carvings of saints, rustic chairs, and old feni bottles. The store draws people from far and wide who love antiquing.
When you’re done rummaging through treasures from the past, make your way over to Verodina’s pottery studio, where the artist herself takes you through the history of the place and shares the stories behind her creations. Working with wood, clay, and stone, Verodina is known for her distinctly shaped figures that depict the intimacies of human moments – women chatting, a woman with a cat nestled in her lap, and couples exchanging poignant glances. She can be whimsical – a cute little mouse curled on top of a pot, or boldly reverent with fantastical depictions of angels and Jesus Christ that adorn church gardens. Her skill with ceramics is also clear in pieces where she uses raku glazes to differentiate the clothes of her female figures. At her studio, you can also pick up more functional pieces – mugs, plates, and other smaller decorative items.
If you seek to connect with a passionate artist and delve deeper into Goa’s heritage and art scene, find Verodina’s studio.
