The Irulas are indigenous tribes whose DNA test reveal close ancestral relation with the African population.
The irulas are forest-dwellers and hence they get their name, which literally means “People of the darkness”. They are known for overpowering and taming wild beasts.
Visit the famous porivarai rock paintings which are over 2000 years old and get a closer look at the lives of the ancient men. In Tamil, pori can mean sparks of fire and arai, a room. The Irulas use a flame to scare the bees away and come away with the honeycombs. The rock at Porivarai is about 300 feet high and 500 feet long. Paintings ranging from battle fields to cattle rearing, heards of animals to humans can be seen here.

Visit the village Mullikuppur of the Irulas.
Meet and greet with the irula tribals for about 15 min.
Walk to the Porivarai rock paintings down the hills, with 2 tribals gathering more information of the tradition and culture. A slow trek would take about 1 hour.
Time spent in the Porivarai rock looking and reading of the painting would take close to 30 min +.
Walk up-hill to the Mullikuppaiyoor village would take about 1 hour 30min .
